Breaking through the problem

Updated: Apr 29

In a coaching conversation, my coachee was sharing the problems that he was facing. After listening to him patiently, when he paused I asked him a question. So what would you like to happen instead of the current situation? He took a long pause, and his reply was, "I don't know". I asked him What if you knew? what would the new situation look like for you? He shrugged his shoulders and said, "I don't know".

Sometimes, we are so bogged down by our problems, that we cannot consider new possibilities. The problem has now grown bigger than our potential to solve that problem.

So here's where we can become mindful about the narrative in our head which goes on in a loop, rather than having any fresh thoughts or insights. For a few moments, we can let go of the narrative and imagine new possibilities. What would a new desirable future look like?

That's when we will start shifting our energies and mentally stepping out of our problems, to consider new possibilities. And this, if done good enough number of times, can create the space and momentum in our mind to have fresh thoughts and take new actions.
